About...
The grass snake, latin name natrix natrix, sometimes called the ringed snake or water snake is a Eurasian non-venomous snake. It is often found near water and feeds almost exclusively on amphibians. The name natrix is probably derived from the Latin nare or natare "to swim". The grass snake is typically dark green or brown in colour with a characteristic yellow collar behind the head, which explains the alternative name ringed snake, alike in Polish "zaskroniec". In the past in Lithuania people believed that the grass snake is a saint animal, which brings prosperity to the house close to which it lives. Today the most common of all snakes in Poland is a species subject to strict protection.
