May is a special culinary period of the year in Poland when some things simply cannot miss on your plate. Asparagus shoots are certainly one of these luxuries.
May is also a special time in my family, because my father celebrates his birthday and name day. This year I decided to make him a sweet gift - his favorite rich almond fruitcake. It was my first fruitcake ever so I was very happy to hear that it has been all consumed in one day. I guess I have to add it to my success list.
My father is a great admirer of Greece, so his birthday could mean just one thing - another chapter in the Greek cuisine. Finally I had a chance to taste the famous pastitsio.
Pastitsio is a type of a Greek baked pasta dish with ground meat and béchamel sauce. It resembles the Italian lasagne, but it is prepared with the use of a special tubular pasta and ground meat spiced with cinnamon and cloves. The pasta mixed with bechamel is layered with meat and groated goat cheese kefalotyri and then the whole thing is baked. I love cheese, spices, pasta, so I was all in seventh heaven. To put is short, a visit to my father always makes up for a trip to Greece.
